According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current median age of transportation and warehousing professionals is approximately 43.7 years old. This means that Millennials and Generation Z are the latest to enter the workforce and therefore are the future of the transportation industry. Millennials currently make up the largest generation of the workforce at 35% and will make up 75% by 2030, according to a 2018 Pew Research Center analysis.
As the transportation industry continues to grow each year and more industry veterans are nearing retirement age, companies will need to attract the attention of these younger generations. Acquiring and keeping a multigenerational team could require large changes in much of the industry. This could mean moving further into the digital age, supporting diversity efforts, offering flexibility and remote work and introducing other main tenets of the new generation into your business model.
